(from the Chronicle of Higher Education -- subscriber-only content) Student falls from building roofs, balconies and windows are an ongoing risk at colleges and universities — and at independent schools too. Once considered "freak accidents," they're getting attention from growing numbers of institutions, but the solutions are not always simple. One reason is the age and condition of many campus buildings, making accidents and code violations more likely. Even more challenging is alcohol consumption, which can take the risk off campus and challenge schools to police students even when they leave the grounds.
Proactive dorm-safety policies and practices can cover a wide range, including prohibiting beds (or even all furniture) from being placed against windows, requiring guard-rails on lofted beds, installing security screens on windows with access to dorm roofs, having RAs conduct regular room inspections, holding frequent safety and awareness training, and decreasing the size of certain windows, along with how wide they can open.
