FLSA Injunction Too Late to Curb Some Higher-Ed Costs

To raise pay or not to raise pay? Uncertainty regarding the future of the FLSA rule governing overtime pay appears to have halted plans by many colleges and universities to give across-the-board pay raises to postdoctoral instructors and others who earn less than the proposed new overtime threshold of $47,476 a year. As of late November, just before the injunction against the new rule, many institutions had not announced their intentions about raising salaries or tracking hours. Those that did raise salaries now face higher cost structures ranging from $44,000 to more than $10 million per institution, depending on the staff size.
