Global For-Profit Disrupts Private School Market

(From Washingtonian) The opening of Whittle School & Studios, a global for-profit school, may cause an “an enormous disruptive effect” among independent schools in Washington, DC. While Whittle’s $49,000 base tuition is higher than that of other elite independent schools in the market, it is offering both merit- and need-based scholarships, which differentiates it from the pack. Whittle currently enrolls only 200 students, but its goal is to expand to 2,500 within the next five years. If Whittle succeeds in recruiting and retaining students who would have been paying full-fare at other schools, that could have a big impact on the student pool.
