Some 58 million students worldwide signed up for at least one MOOC (massive online open course) in 2016, with growth especially pronounced on regional platforms in Latin America and China. The latest figures from Class Central, an aggregator of online course listings, also show an increase in fee-based courses, self-paced learning, courses for "professional" learners and smaller learning cohorts. Students may choose among some 7,000 MOOCs offered by 700 universities and other providers, including the Coursera platform, which has 1,700 active courses and 23 million students.
