(from ICEF Monitor) A new report from Savills, a global real estate services firm, illuminates a number of trends emerging in the student housing space, particularly in the study abroad sector. These include continued growth in student numbers; the importance of regional study destinations; and an uptick in the student housing supply. While most institutions provide housing on or near campus, many haven't brought the housing up to the standards students expect today. Another firm’s study showed that students prefer private rooms with common space (gyms, entertainment lounges), separate study space and close proximity to classes.
Savills identified a need for more mixed-use housing that has students living side-by-side with non-students. In general, the market also needs more beds that target the middle ground between the "premium-priced purpose-built" student housing coming onto the market and traditional campus housing that institutions offer directly.
