(from NPQ) Be mindful when asking your board to approve a "consent agenda." This section of board material groups together non-controversial agenda items — things like meeting minutes, and other routine or procedural items — for a straight up or down vote. (Items can always be moved to the full agenda.) A recent case in Texas shows the importance of reading the consent agenda carefully. Among the usual items was one that asked the board to rescind a school board ethics/conflict of interest disclosure policy that reportedly had been adopted only a few months earlier. Many people who voted at that meeting said they didn't realize this item was even on the consent agenda, suggesting they hadn't read the document.
