A quarter of all American employees have taken time off work to care for a family member, and another quarter who haven't yet done so say they are likely to take such leave in the future. More employees have taken leave to care for a sick family member (11 percent) than for the birth or adoption of a child (7 percent). Those who took leave for a sick family member were more likely to say that they had sufficient time off (50 percent) than those who took off for a new child (36 percent). However, more of the former group (50 percent) felt their job security was at risk for taking leave than those taking maternity or paternity leave (37 percent). Men are more likely than women to say that taking family leave had a positive impact on their family and also on their career.
