The University of Missouri system faces steep reductions in state funding as well as a 7 percent decline in enrollment since 2015. Furthermore, facilities maintenance costs are expected to rise by $15 million. The system's new president, Mun Choi, has proposed a new budget that cuts hundreds of positions, but none that are tenure or tenure-track. Some retiring faculty will not be replaced, and Choi has designated $39 million for new programs and hires that will position the university for the future. Services, vendors and programs will be consolidated throughout the system as well. Some praise the budget as more forward-thinking than others developed in recent years under frequent leadership turnover.
