Harvard Rescissions Spotlight Social Media Risks

Harvard University's decision to rescind admissions offers to at least 10 prospective fall freshmen adds to the growing list of reasons for independent schools to educate students about appropriate usage of social media — even when those students are at the top of their class. The Harvard Crimson reported on June 4 that the students had "traded sexually explicit memes and messages that sometimes targeted minority groups in a private Facebook group chat." Group chats are a popular way for incoming students to connect with others. Like other educational institutions, Harvard has an official Facebook group for the class of 2021, managed by the school's admissions office, but it also disclaims responsibility for "unofficial groups" and warns class members that their admissions offers are subject to rescission.
