Helping Students Deal with College Admissions Pressures

(from the Christensen Institute) As the number of students attending four-year colleges has more than doubled since the early 1970s, so too has the social and emotional pressures surrounding the college applications process. In the forthcoming book, “Choosing College,” authors Michael B. Horn and Bob Modesta reveal a pressure cooker for students hoping to get into a top college in their pursuit of top accolades, ranking and success. In many communities, these pressures “play out in pernicious ways,” as the majority of students report being heavily stressed over their classes.

How can parents and educators help students better navigate the college application process? Focus on what’s right for them, on an individual basis, and broaden the choices that children have so that they find the right match, advised Horn and Modesta.
