High Housing Costs Fuel School Expansions

(from Greenwich Time) Rising housing costs in many parts of the country are forcing independent schools to get creative in helping employees afford the local cost of living. The neighbors aren't always supportive.

In upscale Greenwich, Connecticut, the all-boys Brunswick School has bought at least 12 properties since 1980, converting some single-family homes into multi-family units to accomodate faculty and recently building four new faculty homes. While the school now owns 71 faculty units and provides housing to 86 employees, it has agreed in principle to purchase an additional 43-acre parcel on which it may build more faculty housing, as well as educational spaces. In the case of one single-family home it wants to convert, Brunswick has met some opposition from neighbors concerned that a "rooming house" would damage the neighborhood's character, along with bringing more traffic to quiet streets.
