(from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education) U.S. colleges and universities raised a record-breaking $46.73 billion during the 2018 academic fiscal year, an increase of 7.2 percent from the previous year. A strong stock market and overall economy are credited for much of the increase, along with "the collective work of advancement professionals," according to a survey from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Here's a breakdown of the donors:

  • Foundations: $14.01 billion (30%)
  • Alumni: $12.15 billion (26%)
  • Nonalummi individuals: $8.57 billion (18.3%)
  • Corporations: $6.73 billion (14.4%)
  • Other organizations: $5.27 billion (11.3%)

While gifts from every type of donor increased, gifts from "other organizations" rose 13.5 percent. This category includes fundraising consortia, religious organizations and donor-advised funds. Giving to current operations rose 6.2 percent, and giving for capital purposes rose 8.6 percent.
