New Data On Higher Ed's Pandemic-Driven Layoffs

(From Chronicle of Higher Education) Despite a significant increase in recent months, the net loss in jobs in higher education remains so large that it’s erased more than a decade of job gains for the sector, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Workers with limited labor protections, like those providing administrative support, were particularly hard hit. So were employees of color, who represent more than half of workers who lost jobs, though they represent just a quarter of higher ed's labor force.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics also reveal:

  • Net job losses were concentrated among employees who were under 29 or between the ages of 65 and 74.
  • Women accounted for 56% of higher ed's work force before the pandemic — and 58% of the job losses.
