(from Education Week) On-campus hostility toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students seems to be rising, after years of improvement. Overall, more than 80 percent of LGBTQ students were harassed or assaulted at school in 2017, according to the 2017 National School Climate Survey, commissioned by GLSEN (formerly the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network). While there were fewer reported incidents of physical harassment and assault based on sexual orientation in 2017 than in 2015, transgender students experienced more verbal harassment.
The findings come in the aftermath of the Trump administration's decision to rescind Obama-era guidance calling upon schools to respond quickly to harassment of transgender students, among other protections. About 23,000 LGBTQ youth from around the U.S. participated in the survey.
