(from the Chronicle of Higher Education) Second only to data analysts, colleges and universities are hiring campus police and public-safety personnel at a rate faster than any other position, according to the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources. There were 1,077 campus cops in 2017, and 1,403 in 2018, an increase of 30 percent.
Extreme events on campus, from protests against controversial speakers to shootings, are believed to be behind the increase. "For many, many years we kind of had this idea that ‘Those things don’t happen on our campuses. We are a learning environment...,’" said Steven J. Healy, chief executive of a campus safety consulting firm. "I think folks have now moved beyond that ‘bad things can’t happen.’ "
