(From SHRM) Last week, the House passed a bill that would ban race-based hair discrimination at work, federal programs and public accommodations. The CROWN Act, which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Act, passed along party lines with a vote of 235-189. As the bill moves to the Senate, Fisher Phillips attorney Annie Reese recommends that employers review their appearance policies and prepare to remove references to prohibited hairstyles, such as Afros, cornrows, braids, locs or twists. "Proponents of the CROWN Act believe that it will protect an important piece of racial identity," Reese said.
