(from Architectural Digest) "The last thing we want is to turn our schools into fortresses," said architect Julia McFadden, who helped design the new Sandy Hook Elementary School. She and other school architects aren't opposed to measures such as metal detectors and closed-circuit cameras, but they caution against making schools more institutional and impersonal in efforts to prevent violent behavior. The larger goal, they say, should be to use architecture and design to integrate security elements seamlessly and to encourage more positive personal interactions — thereby helping students and faculty become more aware of one another.
