(from Inside Higher Ed) Following the murder of George Floyd and widespread national protests against racial injustices in the spring and summer of 2020, many colleges and universities issued statements condemning racial inequalities and pledged to support change. The National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education issued a recent report on how colleges followed up on those statements. In the eight months following Floyd’s death, more than a third of survey respondents said they began funding new initiatives related to diversity, equity and inclusion work. About a quarter of institutions are seeking grant funding and donations for DEI-related initiatives; 22% of institutions set up institutional racial equity committees; 21% hired additional staff for the central office of equity, diversity and inclusion; and 18% are developing DEI education or training resources for students.
