(From The Conversation) As the House Judiciary Committee considers two articles of impeachment against the president, many teachers are grappling with the challenge and ethics of helping their students understand the impeachment hearing at this moment in the nation's history. Depending on how old their students are, teachers can start by explaining or reviewing the process of impeachment and other relevant documents, suggests Paula McAvoy, thought leader in social studies education. Reviewing and discussing the original sources, including the documents and testimony coming before the public, can not only help students consider the charges being brought, but also give teachers the opportunity to teach news literacy. Of course, teachers may be hesitant to bring politics into the classroom. But the reality is that if students are going to be prepared for a politically polarized environment, McAvoy argues, then educators need to teach about partisanship and ideology.
