Meetings: unproductive time-wasters or linchpins to effective teamwork? Depends on how you approach them, according to experts in leadership development and workplace collaboration. Four strategies for getting more out of meetings:
- Prepare. Prior to the meeting, ask for an agenda and study it. If you have an idea to discuss, build support ahead of time through casual chats. In the meeting itself, speak up early.
- Beware (what one person calls) the "tyranny of the most verbose," who can sideline others. Junior or quiet staff members: Sit forward, express confidence through body language and use "muscular language."
- Embrace the uncomfortable. Don't be afraid to dissent or point out uncomfortable truths. Chances are, you're not alone in feeling that way.
- Be selective in the meetings you attend. Only go if you can play a role. If you decline an invitation, frame it as an opportunity for others to add more.
