(from Brookings) Despite evidence showing that teachers of color benefit white students, schools continue to focus on bringing teachers of color into classrooms with mostly minority students. The result could create an educational system where the teacher workforce is as diverse as its students — and as segregated, according to Michael Hanson of the Brown Center on Education at Brookings. "Schools serving large numbers of minority students already tend to have the most racially diverse workforces, while many students of color in predominantly white schools have virtually no exposure to teachers of color," he wrote. Making the case "for a new framework around the hiring of nonwhite teachers," he said that nonwhite teachers are especially needed in schools with few or no teachers of color.
