(From BBC) Effective September 1, 2020, independent schools will be taxed full business rates under the Non-Domestic Rates (Scotland) Bill. The announcement means schools will no longer get relief of up to 20% on their bills for non-domestic rates unless they are responsible for teaching children with additional support needs. Independent schools are expected to be hit by a £37 million bill over the next five years, and some schools could be forced to close. Schools may be forced to raise tuition, sell off assets such as playing fields, cut teachers or scale back financial aid, according to reporting by The Herald.
