Independent Schools See Higher Enrollment, Year-End Vacation Policy Considerations

(From The Hill) In survey of 160 independent schools conducted by MISBO, almost half of schools (78) surveyed report they have experienced higher enrollment in the current school year, relative to the prior year. Forty-eight schools experienced a decrease in enrollment, while the remaining 34 schools had enrollments “stay about the same.” Of schools where enrollment essentially was unchanged, the reason that enrollment did not increase at 14 of them was because they were at capacity.

One reason independent schools may have gained enrollment despite the severe recession is that these schools have been more likely to remain open, having created detailed protocols based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other guidelines to maintain student and teacher safety, according MISBO’s Damian Kavanagh and Benjamin Scafidi of Kennesaw State University. For example, of the surveyed schools, the majority (75%) are currently open full time, for face-to-face learning, and the remaining schools are on a hybrid schedule.

(From SHRM) As 2020 comes to an end, many employers have another pandemic-related issue to resolve: how to handle employees' unused vacation balances or competing requests to take time off before Dec. 31. Those considerations should should include communicating with employees to remind them of existing policies requiring advance notice of paid-time-off requests and carefully assessing the employer's business needs when deciding which requests to approve or deny, according to legal experts. When deciding to change policies, including "use-it-or-lose-it" vacation policies that eliminate vacation balances at the end of the year,  employers will have to consider business and legal factors, including how state laws treat time that is rolled over or cashed out and also review their own handbooks and vacation policies on the topic. When an employee's request is denied, employers should clearly communicate the business reasons for the decision.
