(from ICEF Monitor) The number of international students enrolled in Canadian secondary schools and higher-education institutions climbed nearly 120 percent between 2010 and 2017, with pronounced recent growth attributed to the country's reputation for high-quality education as well as safety and tolerance. With 495,525 international students enrolled last year, the country reached its long-term goals of hosting 450,000 foreign students by 2022 five years ahead of schedule.
China and India have been the biggest drivers of growth in Canada, representing 28 percent and 25 percent of foreign students, respectively. Fastest growth has been in Vietnam (up 89 percent in 2017), Iran (up 45 percent) and Bangladesh (up 41 percent), in addition to India (up 63 percent).
Collectively, these students spent an estimated $12 billion US (CDN $15.5 billion) in Canada in 2016, counting tuition, accommodations and discretionary spending, according to Global Affairs Canada.
