(From Venable LLP) Spring has arrived, which means that it is time for independent schools to consider updating their employee and parent-student handbooks for the 2022-2023 school year. Experts at Venable LLP recommend three areas of focus for the coming year:
- Mental health. Schools may seek authorization for to speak with a student's healthcare provider to obtain medical records, treatment plans and such other information.
- Parent conduct. Consider establishing a written policies that clearly state what the school considers to be acceptable conduct for parents and the consequences for conduct that is inconsistent with the school's expectations.
- Student sexual misconduct allegations. Schools may want to examine their existing student sexual misconduct policy as it relates to the school's obligations to investigate claims of inappropriate conduct.
