Key Practices for Inclusive Education

(From The Chronicle of Higher Education) If school leaders are committed to improving student engagement and retention, they would do well to embrace inclusive practices in education, advises Kevin Gannon, director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. "Inclusive teaching promotes the effective and meaningful learning that's the vital foundation for student success," he explained. How to make a genuine commitment to inclusive pedagogy?

Be sure to critically examine not just the way classes are taught on a day-to-day basis, but also ask if the course design — including assigned readings, assessments and daily activities — reflect a diverse set of identifies and perspectives. By intentionally using teaching strategies that promote a sense of belonging and invites student participation, faculty members can give students the confidence to engage with the curriculum and one another, Gannon said.
