Leadership Lessons from Final Four Coaches

(from Inc.) PR expert Steve Cody finds leadership wisdom in each of this year's NCAA Division I men's basketball Final Four coaches.

  • Porter Moser, Loyola of Chicago: Trust your instincts. If your skills don't fit at one organization, try them at another.
  • John Beilein, Michigan: "Coach the whole player." For instance, a three-point specialist should learn every aspect of the sport in addition to his or her strong suit. Another aphorism: "Recruit players. Not stars."
  • Jay Wright, Villanova: Mentorship. Rather than focusing on what he can get out of his players, Wright focuses on what he can give them.
  • Bill Self, Kansas: Self has an uncanny ability to understand the mindset of the Generation Z player — someone who has a tough time distinguishing between coaching and criticism — while also respecting tradition. That trait also enables great entrepreneurs to motivate wizened Boomers and the youngest generaion of workers.
