Lessons for Schools from the Global Ransomware Attack

May 17, 2017, 2:38 PM

U.S.-based independent schools and other organizations seem to have largely avoided the "WannaCry" ransomware attacks that hit thousands of computer systems last weekend, but the incidents underscore the importance of following best practices with computer security. Blogger Jennifer Carey, director of educational technology at the Ransom Everglades School, identifies three lessons for schools:

  • Use current systems, and install all security updates. Many of the affected systems were running either old operating systems (like Windows XP, for which Microsoftno longer releases security updates) or systems on which they hadn't installed critical security updates.
  • Don't use pirated software or try to install software on more devices than licensed for. Both bring security risks that far outweigh any potential cost savings.
  • Get schooled on "phishing," or clicking on a link or file that can install malware onto your device.
