Lessons from Indiana's Voucher Program

Feb 26, 2018, 4:02 PM

(from Education Next) With more than 34,000 students receiving vouchers and 313 private schools participating, Indiana's tuition-voucher program is the nation's largest. A four-year evaluation of the program suggests that students are most likely to benefit academically if they either begin their academic career in private schools or begin the transition from public school at an earlier grade level, as it may take a few years to acclimate to what are usually more rigorous academic standards and higher expectations for homework and schoolwork. Other findings:

  • 76 percent of Indiana's private schools, and almost 100 percent of its Catholic schools, participate in the voucher program.
  • The majority of participating students have only attended private schools.
  • By 2016-2017, 60 percent of participating students were white, 20 percent were Hispanic and 12 percent were African-American.
