Leveraging Summer to Prepare for Reopening

Jul 9, 2021, 4:19 PM

(from Venable) Independent schools can use summer months to prepare for the forthcoming school year in the following ways:

  • Revisit and update employee and student handbooks, including policies around health and safety, anti-bias, political activities, Title IX and state and federal laws
  • Employee onboarding. For example, consider auditing the new hire documentation of employees who were hired last year in haste to ensure that the school complied with state background screening requirements, that reference checks were completed for each new hire, and that all parts of the school's onboarding process were followed.
  • Employee training (both new and current). For example, provide training on the school's policies, procedures, and job duties, and on the school's policies regarding discrimination, harassment, and retaliation; appropriate boundaries with students; mandated reporting; and professionalism in the workplace.
