Mapping the Teacher Diversity Gap

Oct 24, 2017, 2:18 PM

(from Brookings) Minority teachers are underrepresented across much of the United States, including in areas populated heavily with students who tend to benefit most from having minority teachers — students of African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American or Pacific Islander heritage. The "diversity gap" exists in regions where minority students constitute a far greater share of the population than minority teachers. In much of the Western U.S., for example, there is a moderate or large Hispanic diversity gap. Generally, diversity gaps parallel demographic patterns. For instance, black diversity gaps are largest across the South, Mid-Atlantic and in major urban centers in the broader Rust Belt region.
