(from Jill Goodman Consulting) School leaders who overlook grandparents in their marketing, admissions, and retention and development efforts do it at their peril. In the last 10 years, consultant Jill Goodman has seen an increase in grandparents sharing parenting responsibilities to help their working children. "They drop off grandchildren at school, pick them up, wait for them during tutoring/sports/dance, and volunteer at the school with regularity." Millennial parents turn to their parents for guidance on school choices too, sometimes even asking admissions directors if they can bring their parents to open houses and admissions event."
"Let's invite grandparents into the process," Goodman wrote. Many millennial parents want to include their parents in the significant and potentially costly decisions they make for their children's education. In addtion, changes to 529 laws create more opportunities for grandparents to help pay for K-12 independent school tuition. Consider an admissions event for grandparents, Goodman suggested. "Be bold about encouraging grandparents to join their children and grandchildren at your school. Some will not take you up on it, and others will be relieved and grateful."
