Mental Health Care for School Safety?

Aug 14, 2019, 2:48 PM

(From Missourinet) Rising concerns about mental illness among adolescents are prompting more schools to invest in prevention interventions that help connect youth with needed treatment and services. One Missouri task force is now recommending school-based mental health services and healthcare to boost safety in schools. The group engaged the community through outreach sessions, to get feedback from educators, parents, law enforcement and students. Suggestions from their report include:

  • Additional services including social skill development, academic support and mentoring to divert youth from the juvenile justice system.
  • An effective school emergency plan, to be shared with emergency responders.
  • Getting a state-level school safety center or coordinator to community school safety related information.
  • Founding a student school safety advisory counsel.
  • Instituting armed resource officers in every school.
