(from North Bay Business Journal) As the role of the chief financial officer continues to evolve, the most effective CFOs continue to add value beyond the traditional finance function and help deliver strong business results. They must develop expertise in areas such as implementing new technologies, managing an increasing amount of risk, understanding analytics and managing data. In addition, they're expected to play an active role in helping to enhance profitability and competitiveness.
Other traits of an effective CFO include strong communication skills and the ability to listen attentively — attributes that are particularly important when there's a need to get buy-in for new initiatives or explain difficult decisions. In addition, by working closely with human resources, CFOs can help to better manage the organization's long-term needs, attract and retain talent, address productivity concerns, and oversee cost containment involving benefits and associated expenses.
