Report: No Cost Savings in Online Learning

(From Inside Higher Ed) Several years ago, dozens of smaller private colleges joined together to form the Consortium for Online Humanities Instruction to share upper level humanities courses. A recent report on the Consortium indicated that the majority of students (84%) reported feeling comfortable participating in in-class discussions online. The majority of instructors (56%), however, reported they were not able to form personal relationships with students in online courses similar to ones they would have in face-to-face interactions. Professors found that creating and teaching online courses took more time, not less, and as a general rule, the consortium's members did not find that their hoped-for cost savings materialized. They did find, though, that the course-sharing arrangement expanded their higher-level offerings in disciplines with small departments.
