(From SHRM) Michigan and Wisconsin have passed laws that prohibit employers from asking job seekers about their salary history. They join 15 states and localities that have some form of prohibition against salary-history questions. Some employers and HR professionals are now opting for greater pay transparency during the hiring process to minimize the need to negotiate pay. Best practices include being forthcoming with salary ranges and allowing candidates to disclose their salary expectations before they get too far into the recruiting process. This way of conducting interviews requires less risk for employers who may lack the time or resources to track the list of states and localities banning salary-history questions during job interviews.
