National Campus Safety Awareness Month

Sep 7, 2018, 3:23 PM

(from Bolton & Company) September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month, an initiative launched by Congress in 2008 to promote and encourage public conversation around violence prevention at schools across the country as well as highlight and address the emerging and developing risks that schools face each year.

According to Cheryl McDowell, vice president at insurance and risk management firm Bolton & Company, the way schools gather and share information pertaining to violence prevention and safety on campus is just as important as the information itself. Empowering campus community members with regular updates on campus safety rules, programs and policies reinforces efforts to ensure safety and security on campus. She also advises schools to ensure that emergency protocols and procedures are widely understood. This enables schools to address questions or challenges and provides an opportunity to cover all the resources available on campus, such as counseling and support services as well as crime and incident reporting contacts.
