Research Highlights Inequities in Legacy Admissions

(From Forbes) Legacy admissions have long been criticized for favoring applicants related to alumni, resulting in lower enrollment of Black, Hispanic, and low-income students compared to institutions without such preferences. A new report by the Institute for Higher Education Policy, analyzing 2021–22 and 2022–23 IPEDS data, found these policies remain prevalent, especially at selective schools. In 2021-22, 32% of selective four-year colleges considered legacy status. These institutions enroll more white students (59% vs. 51%) and fewer Hispanic (12% vs. 15%) and Black (11% vs. 14%) students.
