(From NAIS) About one in five of new and interim heads of school in the 2019-2020 school year followed a head who held the position for three years or fewer according to a new research report from NAIS and the University of Pennsylvania, titled, "Head Turnover at Independent Schools: Sustaining School Leadership." Nearly one in three schools in this survey report having had three or more heads of school in the past 10 years.
Misaligned expectations between the head and the board about what the role of head of school entails may be driving this turnover. For example, 95% of board chairs agreed or strongly agreed that their board set achievable goals for the head of school and that the board and head collaborated on their prioritization. However, only 77% of heads of school agreed. "Left unchecked, this discord can lead to a head’s unexpected departure, voluntary or involuntarily," wrote NAIS research analyst Margaret Anne Rowe.
