As independent schools consider changes to bathrooms and locker rooms to accommodate transgender and gender-nonconforming students, at least two are converting formerly single-sex dorms into gender-neutral housing. Effective next fall, Kirkland House at Phillips Exeter will house 20 or so students, each with their own room. Bathrooms in the formerly girls' dorm will remain communal at the 236-year-old New Hampshire boarding and day school, but with a bit more privacy than they currently provide. Phillips Andover Academy will also convert a dorm into gender-neutral housing.
In a survey of Exeter students, nearly 90 percent of respondents said they supported the new dorms. Alumni, too, have expressed support, according to WGBH Radio.
