(from the Toronto Sun) The number of independent schools in Ontario, Canada increased by 25 percent from 2005-06 to 2015-16 (the latest available data), while the number of public schools remained flat. Public school enrollments dropped by 6 percent, while enrollments in independent schools increased by 12 percent over the previous decade. About half of Ontario's independent schools are religious and a third offer special curriculum such as Montessori or Waldorf. In other Canadian provinces, independent schools receive government funding, but they do not in Ontario.
