Partial Travel Ban Spares Students, Staff

(from The Chronicle of Higher Education) International students and staff from six predominantly Muslim nations appear to be spared by President Trump's travel ban, a limited version of which the U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Monday to allow to take effect. The ruling said visitors with ties to the United States — a group that the court specified includes foreign college students — will be allowed to enter the country. More broadly, the order carved a critical exemption for "foreign nationals who have a credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States."

Despite that exemption, some legal experts and educators warned that the court’s action may affect prospective international students who are in the process of applying for a visa. Already, some institutions are scrambling to provide guidance to international students and staff, as well as worried that the ban will curb their ability to attract prospective students from outside the U.S.
