(from Inside Higher Ed) Growing numbers of U.S. colleges and universities are contracting with companies to recruit for and help manage first-year "pathway" programs for international students who don't meet the criteria for direct admission. The number of such programs has grown to more than 50 within the past decade even as the total number of new international students coming to the U.S. has declined and competition for full-pay international student intensifies. The programs typically consist of a mix of intensive English-language course work and classes, supplemented by tutoring and other academic supports. Program results have varied widely.
