(from the Washington Post) A ruling Monday that employers cannot justify paying a woman less than a man doing similar work because of her salary history. The decision could further narrow the wage gap between the sexes. The ruling, by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, sided with a California math consultant who trained educators on how to better teach math. She had sued her employer, the Fresno (Calif.) County Office of Education, in 2012 after learning her male colleagues made significantly more money than she despite having less experience.
The ruling was issued April 9, one day before Equal Pay Day, the symbolic day dedicated to raising awareness of the gender pay gap. Already, many employers have stopped asking job candidates for salary history. Eight states have passed salary history bans, and 13 more have proposed similar laws.
