British Independent School Fees To Be Taxed

(from the John Groat Journal) Federal government tax in the U.K. called the VAT will be charged on private school fees starting in January, the new Labour Government has confirmed. It will remove the VAT exemption and business rates relief for private schools to enable funding for 6,500 new teachers in state schools. 20% VAT will apply to private school fees well as as “pre-payments of fees” for terms starting in the new year. Changes “will not impact pupils with the most acute special educational needs” where their needs can only be met in private schools. Some worry this will cause an exodus to public schools and some private school closures.
