Most independent schools voluntarily subject job applicants to background checks, but proposed legislation in Connecticut would require it, holding private schools to the same regulations that took effect last July 1 for public schools. Among other requirements, the existing law prescribes questions to applicants that would reveal histories of sexual misconduct, child abuse or neglect. It also precludes separation agreements that allow schools to keep incidents and allegations confidential. If extended to independent schools, the law would "actually empower" prospective employers, said a lawyer who works with many independent schools. It "authorizes them to engage in the kinds of background checks that I think we've always wanted to be able to do."
