(from Gallup.com) Independent schools are still winning the perception war, if by a narrowing margin. A new survey from the Gallup Organization finds that 71 percent of Americans believe that independent private K-12 schools provide an education that is excellent or good, besting such perceptions for parochial schools (63 percent) and well above those for charter schools (55 percent), home schooling (46 percent) and public schooling (44 percent). Despite maintaining the lead, private schools have lost ground in positive ratings in the five years since the previous survey, while public schools have gained. In 2012, 78 percent of Americans rated private schools as excellent or good. Only 37 percent said the same about public schools.
Views among parents with school-age children are largely similar to those of adults without school-age children. Political affiliation, however, can impact quality perceptions. More than three-quarters of Republicans (76 percent) say private schooling provides students with an excellent or good education, compared to 68 percent of Democrats.
