Enrollment in North Carolina's charter schools has doubled since 2011 to nearly 92,000, only 6,000 students shy of statewide (and static) enrollment in private schools. Enrollment in traditional public schools has also remained flat or declined slightly over the same period. Charter growth is expected to continue, particularly in urban centers, amid efforts by state and federal officials to expand the number and role of charter schools while also improving or closing those that perform poorly.
