Public Preschools on the Rise

May 31, 2019, 11:03 AM

(From The Hechinger Report) Local residents are footing the bill for better preschool programs in several cities across the country, drastically bringing down the costs. For example, the average cost of center-based care is $14,208 in Washington State. But one public, subsidized program charges only $1,790 for a year's tuition. Test scores show gains in vocabulary, literacy and math, and Seattle residents are willingly funding these schools via tax hikes. These new preschools put a premium on educated and experienced teachers -- and pay them well and help teachers pay for additional education.
