Public school principals often must focus on far more than student achievement and academic accountability. Attending to logistics, discipline, maintenance issues and a school's fiscal health leaves them little time and attention for academics. To help principals focus on their primary tasks, the District of Columbia Public Schools system has begun hiring directors of operations and logistics. A small pilot program begun in 2014 has developed into a full-fledged program, with business officers in 70 of the city's 115 schools. The director of the new program has extensive experience in charter schools, where business officers are standard hires, as they are independent schools.
